In sanskrit, viparitha means, inverted, and karani “action ”
This excercise is called viparithakarani because when practiced the body takes up an inverted position, the legs above the head.
TECHNIQUE..
Lie on the back and inhale as in complete yogic breathing. Exhale and raise the legs and hips with the help of the arms. Bend the arms and hold the hips in the hands so that the body is supported on the elbows, shoulders and head. The legs should ftom an angke of 60-70 degrees with the ground. Practice abdominal respiration and direct the attention to the thyroid gland. The position may be kept for as long as one feels comforatble. To finish, lower the legs gently to the ground and relax in the starting positions. Repeat the excercise two or three times.

Those with high blood pressure Should consult an experienced Yoga instructor. Before performing this Asana, one Should completely relax.

Hath–Yoga considers the inverted, postition to be the most important excercise fir reviving the body. The Three main inverted postures are viparithakarani, sarvangasana, and shirshasanam. Viparithakarani is the easiest of the other two execute and has the advantages of combining the therapeutic effects of the other two, but in a milder from. It is nevertheless highly recommanded for recharging the body with new energy.
In this position, the blood flows abundantly to the neck, throat and head, so that the thyroid and pituitary glands plus the nervous centres of the brain, all are regenarated. The Pose also prevent formation of wrinkles and can cure goitres.
